Road Safety
Road accidents today constitute one of the biggest hazards to human life and safety. The number of injuries and deaths due to road accidents have increased in India. The magnitudes of road accidents in India is alarming by any standard and every minute there is a road accident and every four minutes a road accident related death. During the year 2016 in India, there were 4,80,652 road accidents, claiming 1,50,785 precious lives and leaving another 4,94,624 person injured. In 2016, accident severity measured by number of persons killed per 100 accidents has reached 31.4 and 46.3 percent of accidents deaths were in the age bracket of 18-35 years. Road traffic injuries and fatalities impose a huge economic burden on the country. The loss of main bread earner and head of household due to death or disability can be catastrophic.
In Haryana State, total of 11234 accidents occurred during the year 2016 and 5024 people died and 10531 were injured. There has been an increase in the number of deaths on road accidents as compared to the previous years. Therefore, more sincere efforts and more effective road safety measures are required to be undertaken to reduce the number of road accidents.
Road accidents create negative impact on the economy, public health and the general welfare of the people. Road accidents are human tragedy involving tremendous human suffering in terms of premature deaths, injuries and loss of productivity, etc. Significant reduction in accident rates is possible only by a wide variety of improvements in design of roads and vehicles, operating environment and enforcement of safety regulations and standards. The current issue includes various dimensions and magnitude of road accidents in India and brings into focus the challenges relating to the prevention of road accidents and their impact.
Hon’ble Supreme Court of India has constituted a Committee on Road Safety (CoRS) vide their order dated 22.04.2014 issued in W.P. No. 295 of 2012 to look all the aspects on Road Safety on the behalf of the Supreme Court to reduce the fatalities on roads.
In order to achieve the target for reduce the fatalities, a coordinated and joint effort is required from all the stake holders as well as citizens to achieve the unprecedented goals on Road Safety.
